Turure Watersteps

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

Distance: 4.37km | Type: Out and Back | Difficulty: Easy

Hey there, fellow adventurers! What a day it has been! Imagine rolling hills, overcast skies, the laughter of friends, and a secluded, natural staircase waterfall – all setting the stage for an unforgettable hike to the Turure Watersteps. Join me as I reminisce about our day in paradise.

The Journey Begins

As the sun peeked through the clouds, the group hopped into my 4x4 Mazda 6, geared up for a quick run to Turure Watersteps. Now if you know my friends, this mostly means, that we had a cooler full of beers and an unnecessary number of Machetes. Dan and Anya had on their new Saucony's which I'm a huge advocate of, Anya got the women's Switchback 2's while Dan decided to go with the new Peregrines, more out of lack of colour choices than a preference for laces over BOAs - but I digress - the weather was perfect: overcast but warm, the cloud cover a gentle shield from the Caribbean sun.

On the Trail

Navigating the trail was like participating in nature's symphony – birdcalls, rustling leaves, distant echoes of water – each adding their own notes to our adventure's soundtrack. Despite the recent heavy rainfall, the usually popular trail was still easy to follow with a couple treefalls changing the route slightly. The trail had its challenging moments, particularly at the river crossings but the group was in good spirits and we made great time. As always, my Garmin was tracking the trail, so you can head over to Strava if you'd like to see the route or check the difficulty.

For those of you thinking river crossings at Turure are knee-deep and an easy wade, remind me to tell you about the time we went to Avocat after three days of rain!

Hello, Turure Watersteps

The first sight of Turure Watersteps is always pure magic. Usually the rows of limestone steps, carved by nature herself, and draped in flowing water are sitting in pools of crystal clear water, but today the heavy rains treated us to beautiful heavy flows and coffee flavoured pools. The increased waterflow made quite the spectacle and I caught more than one of my friends lost for words.

The best part? We had it all to ourselves. It was as if nature had reserved this spectacle just for us.

Time for a Brew

Now, if you've read any of my previous posts, you'll know that no hike is complete without a hot cup of something in the wilderness. I've been seeing the ads forever, so I decided to splurge and buy the Nanopresso Portable Expresso Maker. So, out it came for its maiden voyage with my trusty mini gas stove. As the water bubbled and the rich aroma of coffee wafted through the air, we all gathered around, anticipation growing. There's something uniquely satisfying about sipping a hot espresso, freshly brewed amidst nature's grandeur, laughter echoing off the watersteps.

An Afternoon to Remember

As the day wound down, we decided to make a pit stop on the way home - Shaun and Stephanie recommended we all check Noir Coffee Lab in St. Augustine, but first we had to stop by "Sunday School" in Valencia. It was a particularly busy afternoon and four party buses passed through in the half an hour we were there.

We grabbed some ice-cold beers and let the music flow through us. Eventually, we made it out and headed down to Noir, which if you haven't been? Go. It's a beautiful little cafe with a unique twist on coffee. You can find them on Instagram here: @noircoffeelab

It was the perfect end to a day etched in memory.

I hope this has you longing for your next adventure. Until then, stay adventurous, my friends!
